One interesting part of the last class is hearing different people's stories of how they came to be grown up without riding a bicycle. These memories are sometimes poignant, sometimes funny, but everyone agrees that they are glad they got beyond whatever it was that had been holding them back. We also talk about buying a bike, safety and eventually starting to ride on roads.

We organize group and individual lessons and also teach through the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.

Individual lessons are $20-$40 a lesson, your choice, and are an hour and a half. The Cambridge Center classes are $92 for the four lessons and you can rent a bike for $5 a class. One advantage of the group classes is the camaraderie. Many of our former students from the classes continue to ride together.

Whichever way you choose, you can do it!

We have helmets, knee and elbow pads, gloves and a time-tested method which allows most people to learn without ever falling at all. (Maybe one in six of our students falls in the course of the usual four lessons.)

You will start out on a bicycle that some might say is too small for you, ...but you will be able to reach the ground while sitting on the seat flat-footed. If you start to fall, you will simply put your foot down and catch yourself. We will start out really slow. If you're not going fast, any problem that comes up will be much more manageable.

For those in group classes, the last class is a picnic celebration of our achievement. We usually go out the path to Arlington, often stopping at Spy Pond for our party.

We teach mostly adults but are happy to teach kids too -- we have taught a few dozen kids.

We have about 20 bicycles, so that people can find something that fits them. (Lots of people have had scary or painful bike learning times because of bikes that were too big for them, short people especially, because the average bike would be too big.)

We rent out the bikes outside of classes for $10. We're close to Linear Park, which connects to the Minuteman Bike Path.

If you don't ride a bike, it'll only get harder the longer you wait. If a friend of yours doesn't ride, you can get them a gift certificate or just have them call us. We'll probably be able to convince them that they'd like to learn. But they're the one that has to want to do it.

Street Riding: We sometimes teach individual lessons in negotiating traffic but we mainly refer people to MassBike, which organizes street riding skills classes. Go to MassBike.org, choose Bicycling Skills and then Skills Classes to see what is coming up in the way of street riding classes.
