Teachers

Susan McLucas
We occasionally share our experiences as teachers in the Bicycle Riding School Diary.
For almost 40 years, Susan McLucas has been teaching adults and children to ride bicycles. Since then, thousands of people have become riders and enjoyed this new way of life. Susan has shared her teaching method with other teachers and together they share the teaching.
When she's not teaching bike-riding, Susan ("the Bicycle Whisperer") McLucas works for women's right to their whole bodies, with Sini Sanuman (Healthy Tomorrow) in Bamako, Mali (StopExcision.net). (By the way, she could really use a few new donors to step up, so that she can build up a retirement cushion.)
She also works for peace, participating since 1997 in a weekly vigil against US wars (see this Boston Herald article) and raising awareness about Guantanamo and ending economic sanctions (TV coverage). She is very concerned and organizes protests about political prisoners like Julian Assange, WikiLeaks founder (video1). Before that, she worked for Private Manning (video2, video3). She also likes to care for "public fruit," such as the raspberries in front of her house and the grape vines in Kenney Park, Davis Sq. She sings and plays guitar and can say hello in 50 languages.
You can reach Susan at (617) 776-6524 or (617) 501-9125 (cell) and SusanBMcL@gmail.com.

Paul Pelan is originally from Belfast, Ireland and has lived in Massachusetts for the best part of twenty years. He is an avid recreational cyclist and understands and appreciates the joy of cycling and the enormous well-being and health benefits it brings, while helping lessen our global footprint. Teaching someone, at whatever age, to ride a bike provides a wonderful feeling and a real sense of accomplishment for the rider.
When he’s not riding his bike, or teaching at the Bicycle Riding School, he may be found teaching Humanities at College, walking his Border Collie, Abe, listening to jazz, or watching his beloved soccer team, Manchester United. Paul can be reached at PaulMPelan@gmail.com or (617) 893-3889. |

Katie Parker is an avid bike rider, and is happy to be spreading the joy of bike riding through the Bicycle Riding School!
When not riding bikes, Katie enjoys working to promote STEM education for young scientists. Most recently, she has worked on writing biographies of scientists and entrepreneurs for The Biomimicry Institute. This project aims to inspire young people to pursue careers in STEM, even if they feel that STEM is not meant for them.
In addition to bike riding, Katie is also a long-term soccer player and fan. She is in the early stages of developing a podcast that covers topics in women's soccer and growing the game for future generations of girls and women.
You can reach Katie at (925) 989-0221 or Katie.Parker111@gmail.com .

Peter Conway: I love teaching and I love bikes!! I have been fortunate enough to experience many other countries from the saddle of a bike, and it has been an amazing experience. I have met so many interesting people and seen so many beautiful places. I am also a husband and father to three beautiful children. I have taught all of my children to ride bikes. There is nothing quite like seeing your child experience the joy of riding a bike for the first time.
When I am not biking or teaching biking, I spend a lot of time with my family and friends. I also enjoy playing music, windsurfing, and consulting small startups in technology. Biking can open up endless opportunities for adventure and I am honored to be a part of helping students see that. Pete can be reached at (617) 256-4506 and PeterConway2008@gmail.com. |
